Yogathon; Health for Humanity
India / New Zealand
Yogathon - Health for Humanity, is a division of Hindu Council of New Zealand (HCNZ) and has been successfully running since 2011. It is a two week event across New Zealand, encouraging all New Zealanders to learn, participate and incorporate yoga in their daily lives. Participants register online, individually or as groups and do Surya Namaskar (sun salutations) at their own pace and in their own time. They count the number of times they do the cycle, a combination of 12 asanas and submit their total count to the organising team.
The team set an ambitious target of 108,000 collective Surya Namaskar and this year this target was exceeded to total an impressive count of - 137,000.
Historically, Yogathon was organised during spring in New Zealand. However, since the introduction of International Day of Yoga, this year the event was brought forward to June to coincide with the global event.
Yogathon team works with various yoga centers, schools and tertiary institutes, social, cultural, and spiritual and community organisations to facilitate free classes during the yogathon weeks.
“Yogathon 2019 a success, bigger and better event planned for next year..”
